When you can’t control your kids

This is a bit of tough love.

Yes, motherhood is hard. Yes, life can be hard. Yes, terrible things can happen that are outside of your control.

But do you know what IS absolutely within your control?

Your mindset. Your choices. Your self-growth.

It is okay to validate that you might be lonely, sad, depressed, angry, overwhelmed, etc… Those feelings exist and we shouldn’t try to pretend they don’t.

However, we can choose if we let those feelings dictate our actions or not. This is called a choicepoint.

I talk a lot about choicepoints as a mum. Let me give you an example:

– The kids are melting down, they are tired, you are tired, and the are fighting and throwing their toys everywhere. You can choose whether to snap at them, join their chaos, create rigid, unreasonable boundaries that don’t make sense to them OR you can choose to ground yourself, and reset the situation with creativity, humour, and calmness. 

You might say, well it feels totally out of my control how I respond to this situation in the moment. I get it, I have been there too. 

This is why the first pillar of my program is around self-awareness or learning to listen to your own body. Getting to know your nervous system so that you DO feel in control and you can recognise when pressure is building up and you need to do something about it to re-ground yourself during these chaotic moments.

First your nervous system must feel safe. Then you can make conscious choices.

The choicepoints now multiply! 

* You can choose to ignore your own needs during the day or you can choose to increase your awareness of your needs and weave in small daily habits that lower your stress threshold. 

* You can choose to continue doing the same thing with the same results or you can choose to make a change by focusing on yourself and your needs first (with massive ripple effect).

* You can choose to make life easier on yourself, waste less time, save more energy, and rebuild those relationships by learning how to function in a more effective, healthier, and graceful way.
